The use of burning sage is an ancient Native American & Native African tribal custom used to dispel energetic disharmony, illness or conflict, inspired & adapted as a one of my most favorite practices for activating intuitive senses & creating personal sacred space.
Ensure your space is ventilated. Light the end of your dried sage bundle, gently tamping out the flame & placing it into a heat-resistant container (I like to use an abalone shell to symbolize the element of water & the spirit of ocean), directing the smoke with your hand or a feather into all corners of your declared space. As you do this, visualize the smoke clearing away any negative energy. You might like to call in any higher energy at this time, or perhaps the four elements (earth, air, water, fire).
The clearing/cleansing ritual is intended to elevate your Self & your environment from the everyday to the Sacred. Once the space is cleared, allow the sage to burn out of its own accord, or completely tamp the end of the bundle for re-use. Another option is to bury the charred remains into the earth as a symbol of completion. You can also sage yourself, another, your physical space, an object, or your crystals.
At this time you might like to declare your new intentions, journal, meditate or simply sit in the delicious stillness & soak up the energetic shift you just created.
