Tips and Tools for Empaths and Highly Sensitives

Summering is almost upon us and for many that means traveling to new and beloved places. As a highly sensitive person, travel can often present another layer of challenge and so I thought I’d share a few of my personal practices for being a mindful traveler to yourself and your own precious energy, whilst enjoying the new experiences and joys of summer that await.

 

TRAVEL TIPS


Preparation – to avoid overwhelm/stress; do a little each day to prepare for your departure.

Hydrate well to keep your energetic system cleansed and cleared.

Pack protein snacks (nuts, fruit, I like pieces of dark chocolate for grounding).

Use noise cancelling headphones to filter out the noise of the world.

Essential Oils – I travel with a trio of Rosemary, Lavender and DoTerra “Onguard”.

I also love magnesium cream and spray for nighttime resets.

Bachs “Rescue Remedy” drops are great for travel stresses and Bachs “Nightmelts” at bedtime help me with transitions and time changes.

Less is More - don’t over plan – leave space for spontaneity and time and space just to enjoy “being” in a new environment, culture and experiences.

Make sure you spend daily time alone, outside of itineraries and groups.

Take daily visits to nature to reset, recharge and ground your energy.

Eat plenty of nutrient dense, fresh foods with plenty of “life force” energy to replenish your system.

Energy shielding – essential for crowded airports, stations, trains, & high-volume tourist spaces.

Salt to Cleanse – I always travel with salt scrub for showering to slough away the interactions of the day and if I have access to a bathtub, daily salt soaks are amazingly therapeutic.

Boundaries are your best friend – traveling with others? Make sure to communicate your personal needs prior to your trip and honor the daily personal practices that keep you supported, centered and true to you. Traveling alone? your comfort, your needs, your energy, your safety, your time and space is sacred – “no thank you” should take care of the rest.

Kind re-entry – give yourself a beat (ideally 1 or 2 commitment free days) to returning home and your regular pace/schedule without the overwhelm of a busy calendar.




TRAVEL TOOLS Rx.

AMULET is my “must have” for travel. It's an amazing tool for protecting your auric field before entering any enclosed, crowded space (think, airports, planes, trains, stations, concerts, festivals, malls etc.)

 

Rx.

Take a few moments to center into your own energy. This is an ideal time to call in any intention you have for the day ahead. Shake to activate, close your eyes and spray 3 mists of AMULET - making an arc motion over your crown working from your left to right shoulder. I usually spray my back heart and front heart too.

 

As a smoke-less alternative, AMULET is ideal to use in place of burning sage/palo santo/incense/candles when staying in other hotel rooms, Airbnb’s or other people’s homes and its activated with water programmed with protective crystals and infused with reiki healing light and alchemy crystal sound frequency (so ridiculously good).

 

Rx.

Before you get unpacked – stand in the center of the room and ground yourself into the space. Place one hand on your heart, one hand on your naval area and focus on your own energy whilst taking a few deep inhales and exhales. Then, in your minds’ eye imagine expanding your energy beyond your own physicality and into the space, filling up the room. Breath into this expanded state for a few deep breaths. You might like to state an intention to anchor this practice (e.g. “I am safe and protected.”) You can also perform this practice in reverse when you check out, ensuring your take all your own energy, clear and cleansed with you.

 

Shake to activate and spray 3 mists of AMULET into each of the four corners of the room. I also like to spray the pillow before sleep-time.

 

CRYSTAL Rx.

 

If I only travel with one stone – it’s a crystal Ganesha. Ganesha represents the removal of obstacles; both seen and unforeseen and is a benevolent bringer of blessings. Clear quartz is renowned and revered for its quintessential healing properties, a cleanser of energy, is highly programmable and a beautiful, tangiable keeper of our intentions.

 

Clearing the path for more goodness and joy make these clear quartz Ganeshas my travel crystal of choice (plus at just over an 1" high the mini size makes them ideal for keeping in my purse or pocket).

 

Rx.

Before you leave for your travels – program your crystal with any intention you have for your trip. Intention is everything. Intention is always tethered to you no matter where you wander. What you set your heart, mind, and energy to shapes your experience. I like to set a travel intention that supports the underlying motivation/inspiration/premise of the trip itself. For example, if I’m camping with my family, my intention may be “connection to nature … together”. Whereas if I’m attending a retreat my intention may be “receive, nourish, learn.” Traveling to a new city/country – my intention may be to “stay in wonder, discovery and joy.”

 

I like to code my intention into my crystal either by holding it against my heart, stating my intention out loud, or by imagining a transmission in my minds’ eye. Trust whatever method works for you and then seal the practice with gratitude.
